The Edmonton Geological Society (EGS) is the Edmonton Section of the Geological Association of Canada
. It promotes the science of geology encouraging cooperation among its members and other earth scientists. The Society disseminates knowledge of the science through meetings, field trips, and publications.
Regular activities include an annual field trip in September to outcrops in Alberta, British Columbia, and adjacent areas. The social highlight of the EGS is the annual pub night in late April -- a dinner and geological talk that is both educational and entertaining, bring our members together for an evening of networking and fellowship.

Activities and Meetings
The principal activity of the Society is to sponsor luncheon
meetings during the winter, highlighted by the presentation of a
technical paper by a distinguished speaker. Although some of the
speakers are Edmonton geologists, the Society concentrates on
attracting out of town lecturers, thereby providing local geologists
with a forum in which to exchange views with guest scientists.
Notification of these meetings is sent to EGS members, and all interested persons are welcome to attend.
activities include annual fall field trips, participation at conferences and symposia, and awarding of scholarship and publication prizes.
The Society was founded about 1953 by a group of Edmonton geologists providing a local forum for the pursuit of common interests. Membership in the early years was dominantly representative of the petroleum industry. However, as centralization of the industry in the early 1970, 15 Edmonton's petroleum geologists were relocated to Calgary, leading to a change in Society affiliation in 1974 from the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists to the Geological Association of Canada. The membership now embraces earth scientists with a broad range of interests, engaged in government, institutional, and various industry activities. The Edmonton Geological Society is an association of earth scientists who are drawn together to pursue common interests, both on the local scale and nationally.
